Datamodel concepts#
Tags are used for many purposes.
They have a tagType to indicate what the tag is for:Medium types and sources#
Before calling the Belgapress API, it is advised that the integrator understands the structure and concepts of news classification. The carrier and the brand#
The application aims to reflect the variety of news in the real world. The media sector is continuously changing. Therefore, Belgapress has 2 strictly seperate categorizations that could be confusing but actually do make a lot of sense.MediumType and MediumTypeGroup reflect a categorization of content.
Wherever the term "Medium" is used, it refers to the "carrier"/"touchpoint" of news.Source and SourceGroup reflect a categorization of companies (brands).
Wherever the term "Source" is used, it refers to a certain brand."de Standaard" [Source] is a Newspaper [SourceGroup] that mainly produces newspaper articles [MediumType] as part of the printMediumTypeGroup, but is also active on twitter [MediumType] as part of social [MediumTypeGroup].
"VTM" [Source] is a Television brand [SourceGroup] that mainly produces television content [MediumType] as part of the MultimediaMediumTypeGroup, but also publishes articles on web [MediumType] as part of online [MediumTypeGroup].
subSource and subSourceGroup#
The finest granularity of source classification is a subSource. Belgapress has over 20.000 subSources. Therefore, subSources are not exposed via an API reference list. An actual newsobject (further explained below) will contain the name of the subSource. Integrators have to show the subSource as the source of a certain newsobject.Belga has introduced the concept of a subSourceGroup to query content of a certain source up to a very detailed level, while not having to expose over 20.000 subSources.
A certain source has as much subsourcegroups as it has mediumtypegroups. Hence, a subSourceGroup is the relation between a source and its subsources per mediumTypeGroup.Examples#
